granted, this kid is 16 or something now...but whatever.

adventures in deutchland.

drove myself around today and got completely turned around backwards. the only rules i know when driving are that i should turn the car around if a)street signs start saying north instead of south and b)if i start going up a hill (because somehow all the bad neighborhoods are in the best parts overlooking the city and/or rivers) . in the process of getting lost today i realized that the street signs have little neighborhood markings on them at the top, informing you of your current location. too bad i didn't notice this until i looked up to find thati was on a hill, on north aiken street in garfield. granted, garfield is not that bad, but...yeah not really where i'd like to stop and ask for directions. after this, i made it to a few thrift stores, scored some awesome postcards from the 70's and came back home. doug took me up to troy hill (germantown) and polish hill to check them out.

the weirdest thing is that they never tell you when a street is going to dead end...because i technically doesn't end...it turns into a flights of stairs, complete with street sign. at the bottom or the top of the stairs, the street continues on, pretending that it didn't just cause you to drive completely out of your way to stay on it.

according to google, pittsburgh has over 300 stairways that count as streets.
after troy hill we went to washington's landing, an island in the middle of the allegheny that is half industrial and have over-priced upper class condos. apparently some of the steelers' live there, i mean, why else would one find a hummer with spinning rims in this neighborhood?
